Body-safe silicone is the material standard that every toy on this shelf meets. Non-porous means bacteria cannot penetrate the surface and live there between uses. Phthalate-free means no hormone-disrupting plasticizers. Sterilizable means it can be fully cleaned, not just wiped. It costs more to manufacture than jelly or rubber alternatives, which is exactly why it is worth filtering for specifically when you buy.
It means medical-grade or platinum-cured silicone that is non-porous, phthalate-free, and hypoallergenic. Non-porous means bacteria cannot get inside the material the way they can with jelly or rubber toys. Brands like Tantus, Lelo, and Njoy build their entire lines to this standard and disclose it clearly.
Look for 'medical-grade silicone' or 'platinum-cured silicone' in the material listing. Legitimate body-safe brands like Tantus and Lelo are specific about this. If a product just says 'silicone' with no further detail, or is unusually cheap, it may be a silicone blend with added fillers that are not body-safe.
Non-vibrating silicone toys can be boiled for 3 to 5 minutes or run through the dishwasher on the top rack without soap to fully sterilize. Vibrating models should be cleaned with toy cleaner or mild soap and water only. Tantus and Njoy both specify which of their items are boil-safe.
Different, not better. Silicone is warm to the touch, flexible, and soft. Stainless steel like the Njoy Pure Wand and borosilicate glass are also body-safe, completely non-porous, and better for temperature play. For most first purchases, silicone is the more comfortable and approachable material to start with.
